Thing Thirteen

This was really a good experience, Lisa. I so enjoyed trying out or reacquainting myself with these tools in Coe's Learning 2.0 project.

I thought the pace was easy and the results usable. So far Jing and Delicious seem to be the two I am returning to often. I hope we use Cloud-Computing for our Department discussions, appointments, etc.

Thank you for taking time to do this for us this summer (I know you have the time off too), it truly was to my benefit. I also enjoyed looking at our colleagues' thoughts and creations.

My Wordle is here.

Thing 12, ScreenToaster

Well that took some time, but I found it taking me back to my days as a broadcaster. Timing is everything.

I hope you enjoy this short of a trail I especially liked in the Rocky Mountains a few weeks ago.

I do see many ways of using this in class, esp. in our media workshop. Perhaps even commenting/critiquing student work might be helpful in Intro to Journalism.
I may make short how-to videos as well. I can see offering this to students for an in-class project; I'll have to think about that a bit more.

Yippee, thanks Lisa. How do I edit the video? I tried moving it to iMovie but it wouldn't drag...any ideas/suggestions?

I went to Jing and after watching a few of the help videos, decided to order Jing Pro, better editing opportunities in iMovie. So thanks for that.

I felt ScreenJelly would be too limiting.

Thing #11, RSS Feeds.

Discovery Exercise:

  • Sign up for Google Reader--okey dokey
  • If you've followed any blogs from your companions in 13 Things, they should already show up (in Google Reader)
  • Add at least 3 other blogs, online newspapers, or websites. I added, Media Matters, Huffington Post's College feed and Poynter Online for Journalism.
  • Write a post reflecting on your experience with RSS feeds and news readers
I have used RSS feeds on Moodle, which I find helpful. I have yet to use them in class as an assignment. I encourage student's to check them out, but may have them do more this semester in Intro. I like being able to "see" what others are discussing. Glad you have me back on it this August with an assignment. There is just so much out there floating about, it's easy to "forget" what can be utilized.
I look forward to seeing what others in this workshop are adding. How do I make myself a follower of them all, Lisa? So far Jane and I seem to be reading each others work. Thanks.

#10 Creative Commons

Does CC seem like a good idea? Yes, b/c so many of us are creating useful and breath-taking materials it seems a shame to let them sit on "shelves."

How could you use it with student projects? I do use this, as Lisa has known. In my journalism and media workshop classes students are encouraged to visit CC for creative accessories/inspiration. Sure seems like it has grown in volume even since last May. I did tag it on Delicious too.

Could this help or hinder their understanding and respect of copyright law? I think copyright law has been in trouble since forever but the 'net has certainly exacerbated the issues. I like being able to get the nod so easily from other creative people. It allows me to have a bigger pool to choose from, which to some paid artist who likes to dominate the marketplace a headache.
CUTTING AND PASTING?? WHY IS THAT PLAGIARISM?

Thing #9 LIBRARIES

After an investigation, I posted on LibraryThing, using the name, sgubanc.

I have always wanted a place to "shelve" my books and this seems a perfect spot. Plus I can get to it from anywhere.
I also may search about for what others are using in my field so this will be a super storage site.

I don't quite understand yet how to post my wish list or currently reading, but I'll ask Lisa when she dismounts from her bike seat.

I think I could use this in class as a good place to encourage "sharing" of titles in journalism/media subject matter.

Enjoy this...I did.

Life After Death by PowerPoint

Thing #8 Discovering YouTube

This is a YouTube video I find useful in class when talking to the students about poor/good choices. I thought you might enjoy it as well.
I like the SHARE button and will use it more often to make it easier to connect to work.
Lisa, can this be done on Moodle (Share?).
I have used them from the Web, but have yet to upload any of my work to YouTube. Perhaps it is time to be brave.

Thing 7 Delicious

Discovery Exercise:
  • Create a Delicious account and add websites
  • add me to your network (lisa.wiebenga), then add a few of your colleagues
  • Create a post about your experience AND post your Delicious username

I am up and browsing on Delicious, I had the account for a while but never went back to try it out. Thanks for forcing this on me as a task.

I added you Lisa (but then couldn't find you on Delicious, what am I doing wrong there?).
My user name is (gubanc).

I think this will be nice to use since I am at home adding sites and I do the same at Coe from my office there. Sometimes I can't find a site b/c I marked them at home, etc.

I hope others will want to be added, and I am vowing to use this daily as a repository. Thanks!

They are my pride and joy. Enjoy these snaps of summer 2010.
Thing #6 Twitter

Well, I have been tweeting for about 6 months now. I follow several organizations and people. I usually visit twice a day, but tweet maybe twice/three times a week.

You can follow my tweets at Gubanc. Yesterday I re-tweeted an article about how Redheads (Gingers) have more "action" in the boudoir. I am sure Julianne Moore could have vouched for that, eh?

I follow The Advocate, Rachel Maddow, NPR News, Markos Moulitsas and 32 other Tweet-Makers.

I like Twitter b/c it catches me up quickly. It's where I first heard of the runaway buggy accident in Iowa this past Sunday.
Thing #5

As you can see (below) I posted three photos to my blog using
Flickr.

I liked it a great deal except that I couldn't seem to figure out how to post more than one photo to a posting. After 45 minutes I have surrendered and will wait for assistance. LISA HELP????!

I have not used Flickr, though I have been encouraged. I think Lisa set me up on one last summer. I usually use Walgreen's and then my family/friends can access there for prints.

This gives me a much bigger audience, which means comments can ensue. I think I am wary of hearing any smack about my photos. Sensitive, aren't I?

Anyhoo, I will be brave and experiment with Flickr more often after I am advised how to add more images to one posting.

I took this one morning while driving to Coe. It was eerily beautiful. Thank the Spirits the camera was in the car.

Thing #4 Posting Online Comments

I follow quite a few bloggers, one of my favorites is BitchPh.D. I Blame the Patriarchy is good for real rants and nice photos of Texas living.

I like to read the comments on the above sites b/c they offer me a window into who is reading and following. I post comments when I feel like I have something relevant to say, but that's not too often. I will also comment on MSNBC and Newsweek a bit. I have written and posted photos to Andrew Sullivan on his blog as well.

I know feedback keeps writers working/thinking. Communicating is not a one-way street too often. Feedback is essential.
Thing #3

WIKIS??? To USE or Not to USE

I have never created or edited a wiki page (until now). I discourage students using wiki's (like wikipedia) b/c even though students are familiar with them as starting points for material searches many times they end up as concluding points as well. I find them cumbersome and too detailed, hard to scan and find what you want so to speak.

I am not sure I would use this as opposed to Google Docs. I like the privacy on Google Docs.
Good NYT article about cheating/plagiarism in college (as opposed to cheating in relationships--oh wait this isn't politics.)

Just posted some dates/appointments on Google Calendar and will use it for sure. I like having my appts all in one place and have usually used a hard-copy taped on my desk to refer to each semester.

I like Google Docs as well, and hopefully will find a way to use it for Intro to Journalism.
Any ideas Lisa?? Anyone else?
I have joined a group at Coe College. We promised to complete 13 Internet/social media exercises this summer. I am slow, but committed to completing them.

I am still busy with our four grand daughters living just up the road. We also are in the middle of harvesting blueberries here at our farm. So far 150# and it's just been one week. The rain has made it a glorious crop.

I will use this blog to be political, introspective and hopefully even a bit interesting.

Thanks for stopping in.
